[My son] has come a long way--he is so much more in tune with what is going on around him. I am thrilled to see the progress and am enjoying him so!" |
| "I want to thank you and your Spotlight staff for another successful Spotlight session with my son. [He] had a follow-up doctor's appointment this past Friday. The doctor was impressed by his increased social awareness. I think that Spotlight has a lot to do with [my son's] progress. Please thank all of your staff for their energy and dedication." |

"I wanted to pass along some good news about [our student].
During my meeting with him today, two participants in the group were
trying to work through an argument they had about a week ago
(without making our entire meeting about the argument, but allowing
them some time to discuss it). I tried to bring [him] into the
discussion and asked him if he thought he knew what happened, what
caused the problem. He nailed it! He said, "it sounds
like they are misinterpreting what each other is saying." I
almost fell off my chair. Later, I asked how the
miscommunication could have occurred, and he pointed out that tone
of voice could be one of the reasons. He wouldn't have even
been able to be in the room for that discussion in 6th grade!"
"My son has only been there a week and half but he is very happy.
The instructors, counselors, assistants and directors are the most
amazing peopled I have ever met. This is the FIRST public place I
have ever been with my son, where I do not feel embarrassed about
his AS. I am a very proud mom and I could care less what other
people think of my children. I love them and they know I fiercely
protect them. But I think you can understand what I mean when I say
that our kids are often judged before they are truly understood.
Many have had the painful experience of others glaring, annoyed,
passing judgments and irritated by our children because of his or
her unique qualities or unfortunate behaviors. At Spotlight,
there is no judgment. My son is liked and appreciated for who he is
and celebrated for that. Spotlight is a place where everyone
feels welcome. I cannot say enough great things about this
camp. This summer Spotlight is probably full but keep this place in
mind for your child next summer. Thanks for letting me share. "
"Thank you so much for working with me to develop a new group for my
son. I saw a change in him the first day. He was not the first one
out the door, and he chatted the whole way home. Details came flying
out of him with no prompting from me. It was such a difference. The
second week he actually skipped as he came to the car. While I know
this is NOT socially appropriate for a 15 year old young man, this
is a sign that he is really, really happy. Yesterday he was in a
great mood, and was teasing us all night."
"I'm seeing amazing improvement in [our student's] conversational
skills, within the setting in which I see him ... He has begun to
take part in and initiate friendly banter, a very tough skill, and
he has been showing more skill in moving on from a topic once it has
reached its natural end."
"Thanks for all that you do for these guys. I do need to let you
know what a marked difference there is in [my son] as a result of
his participation in your program. It's very difficult for him to
feel successful and confident when he is at school. We have all
noticed that he is more relaxed and happy and we have to attribute
it to Spotlight. Thanks again!!!"
"We did a lot of different activities to name a few are morning games, theater games, lunch, movie production, outdoor games, and trips on Fridays. But my most favorite was The Simpson’s Club. We got to watch one episode each day together. I was the one who created the club and it was one of the most popular clubs to go to. It was awesome! These activities symbolized ownership and leadership."

"This program was so important to me because everyone always understood my feelings and I was always understood theirs. It felt like I never really had friends like the ones I made. These friendships represented acceptance and happiness. I already planned to go back in the summer of 2008 and I couldn’t be more excited."
"It's been an awesome experience. I've gained friendships and leaned new games, how to be more mature and how to interact with others. Spotlight gets a thumbs up and five stars!"
"This is my third year here and I'm glad that I came back for my third year. I was better at games and making friends. It was a lot of fun."
"Spotlight is an awesome camp and should continue to be this great!!! I love Spotlight!!!"
"The best thing I've learned from Spotlight is that I can do whatever I put my mind to, including the Spotlight goals."
