All teenagers struggle. Those in the 16-22 age range have particular issues that they must face and cope with, sometimes on a daily basis. They are trying to make sense of all the physical, emotional and social changes in their lives; succeed in school; have positive relationships with family and friends; make the right lifestyle choices; and plan for the future - all at the same time
For teenagers with learning, communication and social difficulties, such as those with Asperger's Syndrome and high-functioning autism, these challenges are often more complex and confusing and require more instruction, support and practice than they can get in their schools and communities. At once, they need to understand their own interests, talents, strengths and deficits; develop coping skills and social competence; and identity the people and resources that can help clarify complex situations and give them the tools they need to go forward with confidence.
We will explore the questions and issues facing students 16-22 who are planning for a successful transition into adulthood during an 8-week interactive group program. Thinking bout and planning for further education and training, seeking employment, and learning about and expanding interests and leisure activities are just some of the topics we'll cover. We'll also take an in-depth look at how to have positive social interactions with peers, acquaintances, and members of the community, whether they are causal relationships or have the potential to be long-term.
